On Thursday, April 26 the students will have a math quiz on the following to conclude the Statistics and Probability unit. Please note that all of these concepts have been covered and they have assignments for each of these in their duotangs. They can also use links on the additional resource page for extra support (great review are the scholastic study jam and khan academy video links posted near the top of the resources page) if that is helpful.
The science quiz will cover the following from the evidence and investigation unit on Friday, April 27:

This past week and next in math we will learn about statistics and probability and how the data can be represented. Did you know that there are two types of data; discrete and continuous. Ask your child the difference! Depending on the type of data that is represented will help to decipher the type of graph that needs to be used. We have been analyzing and displaying data in graphs of our own this week and will turn to looking at the differences between theoretical and experimental probability next week. The students have been told there will likely be a quiz for this unit near the end of next week.
In science we started the evidence and investigations unit which has been very interesting. We are learning what it would be like to be an investigator as we are looking at all types of evidence; footprints, markings, fingerprints, soil samples, fabric samples, chromatography and analyzing handwriting samples. A quiz on this unit will likely be at the end of next week as well as it's a quick one! Hard to believe there is only one unit left!! Sky science! We are finished our unit on ancient Athens in Humanities and learned the difference between direct and representative democracy. We are almost finished our book, "Airborn," and will be starting a unit on story writing and mystery (to go with the evidence and investigation unit in Science). Ancient Athens Study Guide - Test Tuesday, April 17
1. Structure of the government of ancient Athens:
4. Direct democracy vs. representative democracy We will be wrapping our or unit on air and flight this week. The students will have a quiz on Friday which will cover what we have learned throughout this unit with a focus on the following:
In math we learned how to take a percent and express it as a fraction and a decimal. We will be having a quiz to wrap up fractions, decimals and percents on Tuesday, April 10. There are several video links and game links on the resources page that students can use to review the concepts if needed. I have also encouraged the kids to take home their math duotangs in order to review the following:
In addition students will work with probability: certainty of events, theoretical vs. experimental, probability of certain events etc. In science we used the thrill of flight website to learn the different parts of an airplane and how the different parts of an airplane work in order to keep the airplane stable and allow the plane to maneuver in different ways. We continue to learn about Ancient Athens in Humanities. We reviewed what we already learned and did some online research. Students also finished their mysterious creature projects. They should have two good copies of writing (descriptive piece and a myth OR new article) and an illustration. Many students were not done their homework and are taking it home to finish this weekend. Together, we did a practice LA PAT and are learning some strategies to use when taking certain types of tests. We will do a practice PAT (either math or LA) every Friday until June. Provincial exams are coming up quickly! We've been spending some time in class reviewing, looking at questions and learning strategies for how to take an exam like the PATs. We want to try to minimize as much as anxiety as possible and believe that practice and bringing awareness to the exam will help.
Here is a link to the FAQ for parents from the Alberta Government which will likely answer (any and all! lol) questions you may have. education.alberta.ca/media/3653440/08-gr6-parentguide-2017-18_20170829.pdf Here are some additional links with some previous exam questions that can be looked at for review or for further information. For more practice exam questions in all subject areas: The exam dates are as follows: May 10: Part A english exam (writing a story) June 14: Science June 18: Math part A (like the ones we've been practicing on Fridays; 15 skill questions with all operations) and part B (problem solving) June 19: Social Studies Countdown to Spring Break :)
Don't forget to book your conference with us this week. Parent-teacher conferences will be Thursday, March 22 (1:00 - 7:30pm) and Friday, March 23 (8:30-12:30pm). In Humanities, students are learning about the roots of democracy in Ancient Athens. Students started off the unit by researching Greece and taking sketch notes in their visual journals. We then looked at being a citizen in Ancient Athens vs. in Canada today. Students learned about the different roles in this society and how much equity and fairness there was compared to what we have now. We have also been continuing to read our novel, "Airborn." It is getting very exciting! Students are now writing about their own mysterious creature, after sketching them and getting feedback from their peers. We will finish this work this week and the journal pages will be due after Spring Break. Last week in class the students were presented with a challenge to design a parachute that supports weight. They had to choose one independent variable to test (size, material or shape of parachute). One of the main objectives is for them to understand what effects the flight of a parachute and what hinders it. There are a couple of websites on the resources page along with a diagram that the students can use in order to answer the " follow up parachute challenge questions" that are due after Spring Break on Tuesday, April 3. In math we learned the similarity between equivalent ratios and fractions and solved problems using them. Our last focus is to look at the relationship between percents, decimals and fractions. The students will have a quiz on fractions (mixed and improper), ratios, percents and decimals shortly after Spring Break. We have been working with improper and mixed fractions, ordering and comparing these, placing them on number lines and solving problems with them. We finished the week with a worksheet on the above which is due Monday. Science has us reviewing what we learned about the Bernoulli principle when we were working on our science fair projects. We have done some activities blowing paper in different ways to see how the air and pressure affects lift. Next we will be reviewing and looking more specifically at the four forces of flight (lift, thrust, drug and gravity (weight)) and how they are in constant tug of war with each other in order to achieve flight. That will take us to looking at a comparison of the flight of birds with airplanes. It's pretty cool how similar they are!
When: Wednesday March 7th, 5pm.
Where: School Learning Commons. Who: Sessions are open to parents of grade 4, 5 and 6 students. Convened by Mrs Meg Leach (Nose Creek Teacher). We are asking that students do not attend as we are working with limited space. Would you like to help support your Grade 4, 5 or 6 student in Math? Come to a fun, relaxed Math Master Class. The session is focused on teaching parents lots of fun games and activities that you can do at home with your children to help support their numeracy skills. All ability levels will be covered, with the main goal fostering a love of learning in our children. Register your attendance to allow us to be fully prepared by completing the Google Form at the following link: https://goo.gl/forms/cyr4j74wHEt0yV4K3 Thank you for your support. Mrs Meg Leach |
