Iroquois Confederacy Study Guide
*You can use your notes, the textbook chapter, websites, the study guide and/or unit review (handed out in class) to help you study for your test We will be wrapping up our focus on patterns this week with a quiz on Friday, May 25. The students are being encouraged to take home their duotangs to review the work that we have done in class in order to prepare for the quiz. Next week we will start our last unit on geometry and angles. The world is filled with shapes large and small, with angles, lines and different geometric shapes. It’s the oldest math, the most basic math - “What shapes fit together to let me build something?” In this unit, students will be exploring the world of angles, polygons, volume and area, as well as how we can measure these. Lastly, students will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes with their different characteristics and learning how to transform (move) them around coordinate grids.
In science the students will be learning about the sun, moon and constellations this week. We are wrapping up our unit on the Iroquois Confederacy this week in Humanities and students will have a quiz next week. We will be working on a final democracy project in which students will need to think back about the pillars of democracy and how they fit into each type of government we have learned about. They will get an opportunity to videotape themselves talking about their own points of view and how fair and equitable each type is to them. This will lead us to talking more about democracy in action and how citizens can take part in the government. After that, our final unit of study in Humanities will be on the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Only 6 weeks to go... What is collective identity?
People have individual characteristics but also share aspects of their identity with others. Those aspects we share with others are often reflected in symbols that express a collective identity. A collective identity is a shared belief system that often includes the same language, culture, values, and attitudes. What is the criteria for a powerful symbol? Inclusive—represents most or all of the group Recognizable Connects to important beliefs and values Your Assignment: Create a representative symbolthat represents the collective identity of a group to which you belong. The group may be a sports team, a club, a religious group or another group with whom the students share a set of values, beliefs or interests. Sketch the symbol in your visual journal Write a paragraph explaining your symbol – What is your symbol? Why did you choose it? How does it represent your group and their collective identity? May 14-18 is Mental Health Awareness Week:
Monday May 14 – Hats on for Mental Health Tuesday May 15 – Dance and Activity Afternoon Wednesday May 16 – Mindfulness and Wellness Wednesday Thursday May 17 – PJ Day As an option for families who are looking for materials to help their child practice/study for the provincial exams in June, we are going to place an order for "THE KEY" Tuesday, May 8. Each guide will be $18 (they are much more expensive if students buy them at a store). The resource should arrive within 2-3 weeks.
An order form will go home today (Tuesday, May 1) and we will collect money and forms for the next week. A different resource can be accessed online for free and it is called "Solaro." This can be accessed through the e-library with a Calgary Public Library Card. You can find the resource by clicking on the e-library and then a-z resources. |
