We have consistently encouraged and chatted about the importance of students having the ability to quickly recall their multiplication facts to 9x9=81 and the related facts in division. With the ability to do so, it makes the student's ability to be able to efficiently answer questions much, much easier and decreases their frustration.
There will be a quiz on Monday in Humanities. Use the following questions to help you study:
Kenneth Oppel is here Tuesday, October 24. Check out his website for more information: http://www.kennethoppel.ca
We are so excited that Mrs. Macdonald will be back tomorrow and can't wait to see her!
Students are starting to present their Science in the News projects to the class and they had their first Math quiz today. We will be having a government quiz coming up...stay tuned. We have also finished our "levels of government services" posters and will be sharing them with each other tomorrow during Humanities. Very exciting...Kenneth Oppel is here!! This author will be visiting our school tomorrow and sharing with us what it is like to be an author and answer some of our questions. We have just started reading the book, "Airborn," and it will be so interesting to see the author that has written this book. 10 lucky winners will be able to take home a signed book tomorrow. This week, we started a "Turkey Problem" in Math, in which students have to solve different problems in order to effectively serve their guests turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. These challenging questions have had students working together to figure out various equations and problems. We will continue this work next week.
In Science, we explored the forest ecosystem a little more and learned about the different organisms and their life cycles. Students learned more about the nutrient cycle and related it to their favourite foods. In Humanities, we talked about the society we live in and what it means to be a citizen. We discussed having rights and responsibilities and students debated which rights were most important to themselves. We also did some mapping activities and introduced the three levels of Canadian government. We will focus more on this next week. Some other activities that you can ask your child about that we have been working on in class: tree art project, article of the week, class newspaper, Friday stations, Shout Outs and class meetings. Have a great weekend and Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Society – people who share the same government rules and laws
Citizen – someone who is born in or has legally become a member of a country Individual Rights – rights that you are entitled to as a person Responsibility – Something you should do, and keep on doing when you have a chance to, because you have the right to do it Students were busy this week in Humanities writing news articles and starting the creation of our class newspaper. Stay tuned for our first edition coming home next week. We looked at the parts of a news article and checked out the website, Newela. Passwords for login are on the "additional resource" section of our blog. Students also created a democracy visual journal page, with the pillars of democracy as the main idea.
In Math, we continue to work on division and are starting to get the hang of doing long division questions. We continue to do "speed drills" every week to work on our basic facts. In Science, students are learning more about trees and forests. Ask your child about the different levels of the forest and about food chains and the nutrient cycle. A letter will be going home next week about Healthy Hunger lunch...stay tuned. |
