Today we shared different bylaws with our group members. Your job is to tell me, in writing, which bylaw is most important and why. You need to be able to justify your answer and give reasons why you think it is most important. Your entry should be 4-6 sentences long. If you would like to review any of the bylaws, you can go to the City of Calgary website found here:

The students will have a review quiz on Monday which will go over all of the concepts taught since September. These concepts have continued to come up the past few months but have been used in different ways.
The quiz will review the following:
review_place_value.pdf factors.pdf multiples_and_common_multiples.pdf review_order_of_operations.pdf Students are being encouraged to take home their math duotangs in order to review, practice and study for the quiz on Monday, November 27. For those of you who weren't done your definitions from today... here you go! Please remember to add an example for each one.
Multiple Start at a number, then count on by that number to get the multiples of that number. Common multiple A multiple of two or more numbers. Prime number A whole number with exactly 2 factors, 1 and itself. Composite number A number with more than 2 factors. Factor Numbers that are multiplied to get a product are factors. For example, in 3 x 7 = 21, the factors of 21 are 3 and 7. Common factor A number that is a factor of each of the given numbers. For example, 3 is a common factor of 15, 9 and 21. This past week in Math we continued to work with factors (factor trees, prime factorization and solving problems with factors) along with learning about prime and composite numbers. Next week our focus will start to turn to order of operations.
In Science we used our knowledge to build cycle mobiles (summarizing how photosynthesis, the water and nutrient cycle positively affect the forests around us. Next week we will learn about different coniferous and deciduous trees in Alberta. We continue to write stories while integrating democracy in Humanities. Our second print edition of the Grade 6 news went out yesterday to whomever grabbed a copy. A big thank you to James B and Jordyn for all of the excellent thought and effort they put in to the edition! Nose Creek School is signing up to try to raise some awareness, and money, for a great cause. Here at NCS we have a strong group of role models for our students, which is a huge positive to have in a Middle School setting! We're just doing our part to try and inspire and educate about these serious and vital causes, while also having fun! NCS Kodiak students will be working together to achieve a common goal of raising $1000.00 as a school! Click on the following link to donate and check out our progress of the NCS Bro-diaks!
Have a great Movember! Nose Creek Kodiaks! https://moteam.co/nose-creek-bro-diaks?mc=1 Another busy week! We had class pictures and our Remembrance Day assembly. Thank you to everyone for their hard work putting on an amazing assembly!
In Humanities, students created a local government scrapbook in their visual journals and are working on a story based on if a local government service no longer existed. We will finish our rough copies soon and talk more about how to edit our work. Students are also working on a democracy cartoon strip, usually during flex time, that we hope to finish soon as well. Don't forget to sign up for parent teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. We look forward to seeing you then. In Math, we have continued to work on speed drills in order to improve automaticity. Please use the resources on the additional resources page to continue practicing and reviewing at home. We have reviewed 2x2 digit multiplication and have learned a new strategy called the area model method. Ask your child how it's done! They can use any strategy that works for them, this was just an alternative. We just finished reviewing how to apply this skill when solving problems. We will have a check in quiz next week. Students also learned a new online game called "Prodigy" which I can assign them curricular math challenges which review what we have learned so far in the year... and they love it!
In Science, we are learning about the nutrient cycle, water cycle and photosynthesis and how these contribute to the health of the forest. The students will be making 3D mobiles next week to summarize their understanding. In Humanities we are continuing to look at our municipal (local) government and what this government does for us. We are also reading a class novel, "Airborn," by Kenneth Opel. Students did their first reflection on the book and provided some predictions about what they think are going to happen in the story. You can subscribe to our blog (updates would be sent directly to your email) using the RSS Feed link on the right hand side. Please note this blog will be updated at least once a week.
